The Sporadic Chicago Bulls Thoughts of Tyler John Westhause — I
The Chicago Bulls franchise is in both a state of flux and rebirth. With a brand new looking Front Office and a new coaching hire in Billy Donovan, the days of GarPax and Boylen have come to an end (writer’s note: thank god.)
I see many in the Bulls fandom looking either for blockbuster trades or a series of high-profile free agent signings. I’m happy to report that I, Tyler Westhause, can confirm that Anthony Davis will not be signing with the Chicago Bulls in the 2020 NBA Free Agency window (writer’s note: I have no idea why anyone thought this was remotely possible.) As a “casual observer,” who is clearly qualified to analyze and critique NBA front office decisions, I think that trades and signings are not ideal for this offseason.
The Chicago Bulls have a tremendous young core, albeit one that is incredibly underdeveloped. I place a lot of that blame on Jim Boylen, but also on the training staff. The team was plagued by injuries in the 2019–2020 NBA Season. It felt as though Otto Porter was injured the entire season, and he was a player I was very excited to see added to the team. Desperately in need of a wing, Otto Porter provides the experience of an above-average, yet wildly over-paid small forward. Deni Avidja has been labeled by many as the best all-around wing players in the 2020 Draft, and with the 4th pick he very likely could be targeted by the Bulls. That being said, many folks seems to think Deni Avidja is the second-coming of Luka Doncic. I believe this is largely because he is white.
Given that this series of posts is called “The Sporadic Chicago Bulls Thoughts of Tyler John Westhause,” it seems appropriate to mention one thing: I both simultaneously love with a passion and hate with a passion the 2019–2020 Chicago Bulls City Edition jerseys.
They pop. I won’t lie. But they also contrast so much with the standard format that I find it confusing while watching games.
In theory the Jersey’s are inspired by “the Chicago Flag and the lakes and rivers of Chicago.”
I am color-blind, but not blind. The Chicago River hardly qualifies as “blue.” And if it is blue, it is not Grand Caymen Island blue. It is I can’t swim in that are you insane “blue.”
I’m likely going to write something else where I rank every Bulls jersey ever made. It will likely be to vent about all of the Christmas jerseys…so if you’re grumpy and getting coal, you’ll love it!
